Do you know a phone number by heart? 2? 5? Did you spend hours chatting on MSN?. Did you have a Tumblr? A MySpace? A webcam? Do you remember the first time you made a video-call?
It’s strange to think that we already look back on these pre-digital moments with nostalgia. Even though the digital world has only been at our fingertips for a short time, it now feels impossible to live without it—Instagram leading the way. Whether for work or daily life, it’s hard to resist the endless temptations of the web. As the line between real and virtual keeps blurring, more and more people are rethinking their relationship with this tool that has become essential: ˚✩˚Internet˚✩˚.
You don't have to go too far back in time to realize that our contemporary version of the web seems to be undergoing the same treatment as our architecture; it's losing its detail, its personality... its human touch. The reason we think back with a twinge of nostalgia to the various glitter emojis downloaded from dubious websites is that people had an online presence that was fueled by intention. The Internet was a space that encouraged them to be curious, to get in touch, to take the time to sit down and read a blog post - or write one!
At the risk of being #cheugy, we miss that not-so-distant Internet because people really gave themselves the right to disconnect, to slow down, to absorb, to be there (wherever that may be). If we followed the advice of algorithm gurus, our entire lives would be online. For many artists and small creators, that’s already the case! The unspoken obligation to constantly post and create content puts immense pressure on people who already have limited time to create freely.
In an effort to use the web more intentionally, we're starting this blog; a deliberate way of sharing the Veri universe (and wardrobe!).
We're not the only ones longing for a more connected Internet. The global village we were promised—the one where people cite their sources, where you can confidently click on a link, where listening comes before judgment, where people fall in love on a forum dedicated to a shared hobby. We’re excited to see what will emerge from this nostalgic exercise, so for those who want to join us in exploring it, we say, unironically : #staytuned
